As Descartes I also take me for granted, it doesn’t seem logical to take myself as just another illusion, because whatever I am with or without a name I exist.
Hume said, and some may agree, I is a requirement of the language a placeholder, but isn’t every word a placeholder? Didn’t humans give words their meaning? Isn’t language a product of humans’ thinking? Words really don’t mean anything, we created them, we gave them some sort of sense; even though I is nothing more than a placeholder, as every word in any language, I still am real, the existence of I is not determine by a word.
If I can’t be determine by a word, a simple placeholder which we by being part of a society accepted, it can be, in my opinion, be determine by ourselves, because who but me could be more qualify to establish what is me. Since we are little we are encourage to know ourselves, to find ourselves, to define ourselves; this is what makes me think that the only person who has control over me is myself, even though people may influence me I have the last word.

I agree with you mariana, we have produced language and we have produced many other tools for interacting between us, and thanks to those tools we now are able to let others gather information about how we are. It could be that we individually wanted to relate and discover if we were real and therefore we created those. Hopefully there will be a day we know.
ReplyDeleteLanguages are a human creation, that is true, and yes, instead of calling me I, I could call myself Nestor as my name. Instead of saying: "I am intelligent", I would say: "Nestor is intelligent". So, it is possible, and valid, because we are all able to create our own language. So, the soul or thing that controls my body, exists, and it can be expressed as you/he/she want(s), but the objective is to clarify that it exists, I am, or Nestor is.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mariana and Gaby, that we say how we want to determine everything, I can say what i want to and its what you think or people have teach you and that what are you going to belive.
ReplyDeleteSo even if I is just a word (that it is) we can see I by another thing, a word that make us, all humans.
